Prepare for the Robin Hood Marathon with Calm Water Floatation

Calm Water blog

If you’re taking part in this weekend’s Ikano Robin Hood Marathon, then today’s guest blog from Nick at Calm Water Floatation Centre in West Bridgford is perfect if you’re looking for the ideal way to prepare for and recover from the strains of Nottingham’s long distance running event.

Are you running in this years Ikano Robin Hood Marathon? Are you a keen sportsperson or do you exercise regularly? We have something to aid preparation, performance and speed recovery that could well be of interest to you.

Floatation Therapy is a truly unique concept in complimentary therapies, which you can experience at our state-of-the-art centre (the very first in the Midlands) at Calm Water Floatation in West Bridgford. As well as Floatation, Calm Water also provides a variety of massage services from our own incredibly experienced ‘in house’ masseuse, who can offer everything from holistic massage to deep tissue work.

Most people know the benefits of massage, but not too many people are aware of Floatation Therapy. If you are one of them, a quick visit to our website should probably be your first port of call however most pressing question for athletes is, how can Floatation improve your athletic performance, shorten post exertion recovery times and prevent future injury?

Research has shown that Floatation Therapy has a significant and positive impact on our wellness, both physically and mentally, by helping to relieve stress and tension as well as elevating mood and improving the quality of sleep.

It does all this by creating an environment in which the body and mind can completely relax, shifting brain waves from our waking state to levels associated with deep sleep. It is the complete darkness, silence and freedom from the sense of touch & gravity that allows the primary senses to be deceived, leaving the brain with very little left to do and so it begins to slow, triggering a relaxed state so profound the brain and body are fooled into believing the other is asleep (without necessarily being so). The body now switches to ‘night time’ mode where it rests, resets and rebuilds ready for the new day ahead and a float session can be so powerful that it can be the equivalent of a full, undisturbed night’s sleep!

There have been many high profile users of Floatation in the sporting arena including Carl Lewis in the 1980’s, the Australian Institute of Sports who carried out extensive research during the 90’s and both of 2015’s Super Bowl finalists – The Seahawks and the Patriots in the USA.

Here in the UK we are very proud to be working with and sponsoring Team GB Sprinters including British 100 and 200m record holder Adam Gemili, 60 and 100m rising track star and 100m World Youth Champion Asha Philip and their coach Steve Fudge.
We have also welcomed Team GB’s 100m Paralympic Champion Jonnie Peacock, 100m and 200m sprinter Laura Sugar, various N.C.C.C. squad members including Stuart Broad, Harry Gurney and Riki Wessels, as well as England and Leicester Tigers’ Dan Cole and Geoff Parling.

So how can Floatation help the Athlete in all of us? Here is what some of our sponsored track stars have had to say on Social Media…

Intrigued? Why not start to dig a little deeper into our website and the clinical research.
If you would like to visit us for a pre-event preparation session or for some post event recovery, we’d love to offer you £10 off your first Floatation session or £5 off a deep tissue massage if you simply bring along your race number or entry form.

You can reach us at enquiries@calm-water.co.uk or on 01159825259. Alternatively, see our listing here on the Experience Nottinghamshire website.

There is one more ‘tip’ I’d like to pass on. If you can’t make it to the centre for a Float session, your aching muscles will love one of the oldest known remedies for easing aches and pains – a simple Epsom Salt bath. You certainly don’t need the 650KG we have in our Float Pods, but 200 to 300 grams in a warm bath helps muscle tissue release lactic acid and remove blood born lactates, reducing the pain and speeding recovery. Sometimes the oldest remedies are still the best! If you’re having trouble finding Epsom Salts, we sell 500g Jars and 250g bags here at the centre.

Good luck if you are running the Ikano Robin Hood Marathon and we hope to see you at Calm Water Floatation Centre sometime soon.
