Nottingham Goose Fair arrives
Tonight starts an annual festival in Nottingham that dates back over 700 years as once again the Goose Fair comes to town.
Starting today, Wednesday 5 October, the Goose Fair rides and attractions will be available through to Sunday 9 October 2011. After a late start tonight at 5.30pm the fair will be open from around lunchtime Thursday to Sunday.
The fair takes its name from farmers who would drive their Geese stock to Nottingham for sale. The first recorded appearance of Goose Fair was in 1284 when it lasted a whopping 8 days. Goose Fair was held on Old Market Square right up until the early 20th century when it moved due to redevelopment of the city centre.
Now located at the Forest Road Recreation Ground, the fair is best accessed by Nottingham’s tram service. Car parking is very difficult and I’d recommend that you look for one of the tram park and rides to be able to get to the fair easily.
Over the years this fair has grown into the monster that it is today with over 70 rides available this year. There are all the classics, including dodgems, waltzers, a big wheel (well in this case actually a giant wheel), the Matterhorn and a mirror maze.
If you’re expecting a very traditional fair though you’ll be very much mistaken as new takes have also been added. This year also sees the arrival of a major Runaway Train Ride, a £1 million ride renovated from the former American Adventure Theme Park by the Mellors Group.
The prize for this year’s most scary, adrenalin-fuelled experience goes to the Cannonball Bungee – a ride that propels willing paying customers (?) high into the air in a steel cage attached to giant elastic bands. They must be mad!
If you fancy something a little more sedate, then have a wander around and eat warm doughnuts or my favourite, mushy peas and mint sauce.
Visitors to this year’s Goose Fair will be able to receive 50p off per ride with the vouchers available from the official Nottingham Goose Fair leaflet. All you need to do is download the PDF, print it off and present it on the day with payment before the ride starts.
So what are you waiting for?
